It didn't become a devastating plague until we sanitized our environment. Poor children did not get polio. Middle class children did. It was only stopped with vaccination. It is not wiped out worldwide, and without vaccination and with international travel, could easily be spread again. There is an oral polio vaccine if you are against IM vaccines. But these sicknesses still happen, and the reason we vaccinate is because once you catch them, treatment is limited and catastrophe very possible. More and more unvaccinated children means more and more risk. Diphtheria is deadly. Tetanus is deadly. Whooping cough, measles, mumps and rubella carry a potential for organ damage, high fevers and brain swelling which can lead to death or permananet disability. It's proven that these diseases are deadly, and it has never been proven that vaccines are more harmful than good.
