After having written a book and blogged for nearly four years now, and found myself now to be much preoccupied with the reality of living with the world in its present precarious state, I really wonder how much more I have to say here. At what point has one proved their thesis on a blog such as mine? The state of our world is nearly perfectly aligned with many ancient prophecies. It’s now a matter of living through the transitions as they come, and they are already present in various incarnations. 2012 doesn’t have to come and go to know we are in for some big changes.

Personally life has not gotten easier; I know many may feel the same way. Economic hardship has hit us all one way or another. It’s been useful to find so much support in terms of raising consciousness, because at the same time, the world is sure making it more challenging to overcome. At least we know we are not alone, and I have great appreciation for all the great thinkers and writers I have met online.

But the actual living through it, in a nutshell, is what Surfing the Tao is all about. Like I’ve said many times, if I had perfected the living of this philosophy myself, I wouldn’t be here anymore to write about it. I go through my own daily ups and downs, and am grateful for the support of friends and family – believe me. I couldn’t do it all without them. You know who you are.

I hate to admit that Twitter is about all I have time for these days – that 140 character limit makes it easy for me to get a few headlines and thoughts out, without the hours spent writing, editing, and searching links. Still, I go days without signing in even there. It’s unfortunate, I know. But there it is.

I am discovering what it means to grow vegetables in Hawaii and battle the bugs. And it’s hard to discover that some of your dear chickens are roosters, instead of the egg-layers you signed up for. It’s a learning curve, to be sure, and I’m grateful for the lessons – I also recognize these are important lessons that deserve my time right now, and along with all the other normal daily dilemmas, the schedule is simply overbooked.

The job situation is too much to even write about. It’s agonizing on so many levels, and not just for me, but for people close to me as well. Many of us are discovering how time seems much, much shorter than it used to; the days flash by and our creative projects languish. If there’s not a quickening currently afoot, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.

Meanwhile I am still somewhat languidly watching the headlines, and not being surprised at anything. We are living in the times I was warned about many times over. Behind the scenes, the p-t-b are busy. Frankly I’m even a little bored by it. Yes, our food is contaminated. Our drug and oil industries are corrupt. Politicians are not who they claim to be. Powerful control mechanisms, such as mind and weather control, are no longer only the realm of conspiracy theorists. Wars and catastrophic earth changes loom on the horizon. Bizarre synchronicities abound. The eschaton is being immanentized. Story at 11. Moving along.

I do sometimes have moments of panic, that I’m not being present enough for those who might need more support during these times. But that doesn’t mean the bad guys have won – far from it. The good guys have already won, but we need to live through it right now. In other words; once you’ve educated yourself on the Truth, step back, cease the panic, and take stock. Love is the only thing that will truly matter in the end. And – til I’m blue in the face – it’s all good.

I, as many others, have years of work behind me, a book even, so I’ve done my part, as best I could. Read my archives. And I’m not disappearing altogether. When more sh-t hits the fan I will be here to comment and advise; that is, if there still is an Internet at that point. But right now, I have to concentrate on my family, my livelihood, my own immediate reality. Perhaps it’s what we should all be doing right now. Get up from the computer, take a look around and wonder what you would do if the power went out – permanently. Even if it doesn’t, you would be well-prepared not only for emergencies, but in your own personal development and relationships. At some point we must all realize that the next step takes place within ourselves.

I have had my own set of personal warnings. How about you?

The Master does nothing, yet he leaves nothing undone.

-Tao Te Ching #38

For those who follow the small world of Surfing the Tao, my switch from WordPress 2.1 to 2.7 went effortlessly but my theme does need updating. After some complaints about the difficulty of reading with the water background I believe I have found a good compromise. I hope this next incarnation to be cleaner and easier to read, as well as better organized.

I will be changing many of my categories into tags and reorganizing the categories. It will take me some time so please excuse the jumble meanwhile. If you can’t find something after these changes or just want to express your opinion, feel free to comment.

Aloha and have a great night!

Aloha all, I am finally upgrading my WordPress installation to 2.7. I have been extremely delinquent in this task as I am still way back on 2.1. So expect some downtime and weirdness here for a bit until it all gets settled.

May also see a new theme here depending on how it goes. Been searching all around for appropriate themes for Surfing the Tao; any suggestions would be appreciated.

Happy Sunday!

I have some friends here in Hawaii who, like many others on this remote and abundant island, choose to live unfettered by technology for the most part. They choose to live close to the earth, and close to each other, rather than close to a wireless signal. When you go to their house, they inevitably offer their overflow of goodies like starfruit, breadfruit or if you’re lucky that day, miracle fruit, which is one of the strangest and most unique experiences I have ever had with food. They work lovingly and diligently on their beautiful green corner of the world, and are always a joy to visit with.

They don’t have cell phones, a cordless telephone for their landline, or cable television, though they do own a set with a DVD player to watch the occasional rental. Before, when we’d get into conversations at their house, they would reach for one of an assortment of reference books and encyclopedias to find a certain fact. I remember trying to explain to them what kind of information they could find online if they got a computer, but I would just get a kind smile; no need, they explained gently. And indeed, they were already very well-informed and thoughtful people, even without a computer. Amazing.

Last year, though, they broke down and took in a hand-me-down laptop from a family member because they recognized that their small business would likely benefit from advertising online. It was a big step for them. Another family member on the mainland built a site for them, and I helped out by downloading some pictures to the webmaster, setting up emails, and finding sites to post their link. I also tutored them on the basics of using a computer. I spent many hours the last couple of years teaching myself WordPress.org as well as the myriad ways to connect and gather information online, but I’m not a total geek. I still need help myself sometimes. However I knew enough to get them started – and I mean really get started. Like where the on button is, how to double click a mouse, and what a Google was.

The first few months I would get phone calls about various pop-ups or gurgles from their desktop, and I would explain which ones to ignore, and which ones to be concerned about, as far as I knew. It was interesting to watch this pair of newborn PC users find their way around. They have asked the most interesting and surprising questions, and were understandably concerned when their computer showed its own brand of intelligence, remembering settings and things about them like where they had gone online. Seeing it through their eyes has been quite enlightening, and not a little frightening when I stopped to think about it. I still hope they will start their own blog some day, because I for one would love to see them spread their knowledge about gardening and sustainable living. But, that is a BIG step for them; they still keep their time online pretty brief, not to mention they are private people, which I can appreciate.

Yin Yang Breadfruit

The most recent question came as unexpected as the rest. What is Twitter?, they asked, curious about the suddenly popular social application. Well, I had to admit, I didn’t really know much about aside from that it was an online chat type of place, that people could use from their cell phones too. I try to sign up for all the places people go online these days, but I hadn’t gotten to that one yet. (I’m still trying to figure out Facebook. I still really don’t get all the hoopla around that one, particularly when it’s common knowledge that the CIA uses it to recruit…and likely for other snorting around as well.) But I was curious too; everyone seems to be Twittering these days, including Barack Obama. In fact the first news of Flight 1549 on the Hudson came from a twitter-er.

So, I signed up, mostly out of curiosity. Add me if you like. I work a full time job too, so I probably won’t be around there much. I’m also not much of a texter, so I probably won’t use my cell phone with it either. But it’s clear that blogging isn’t enough anymore; now there’s microblogging, where people can exchange thoughts in a more rapid-fire and real-time way. On the one hand, I can see that Twitter seems to represent the next stop along the endless quickening of the Internet, this pre-cursor to the noosphere. However, it’s also a bit disconcerting. It’s like Big Brother demanding to know what we’re doing or thinking about every second of the day. Creepy.

Being that it is merely hours before his inauguration, it seemed fun to find Obama on Twitter and add him. His team is known for being very savvy online, and anyway you couldn’t miss the news that his inauguration would be live on Facebook and Twitter, among other sites. Knowing that didn’t ease the strangeness, though, of getting an email today saying he was now following me on Twitter as well. It makes me feel a little self-conscious, even though of course he isn’t personally doing any texting these days, much as he might like too. Recently I noticed a bit of a hubbub about him not wanting to give up his Blackberry when he becomes President, though he will be forced to stop IMing for security reasons. Bummer, dude.

For my computer neophyte friends here in Hawaii, this online, new-tech, real-time social networking is simply unnecessary. For them, communicating with nature, and each other, still takes precedence. I appreciate the fact that when I email them pictures or a link, they don’t always just return the email – they actually CALL me – on the phone! What a concept. They continue to remind me, and us all, of the actual person-to-person relationships we value.

Virtual, relatively anonymous chatter, is a fun side benefit of our new technologies, and I look forward to using them to find more ways to communicate some important concepts to a wider audience. (And occasionally, we do find some real keepers that start out virtual, and become actual, which is always a joy, for there are some really great folks out here. You know who you are. ) But in the end, our real support and survival in the world will come not from virtual sources, but from the actual 3D people in our neighborhoods. It will come from digging in the garden and sharing the bounty, not posting comments online across the globe. Let’s just all make sure we have a nice balance of both.

That said, I think I’ll post a brief note on my Twitter. And then, I’ll give my friends a call, and maybe go by to check out the garden and see if the starfruit is ripe. They’re my favorite.

Help! I’m reaching out to my blog community because I don’t know where else to turn – and I trust you all for your excellent research and thoughtfulness, so I figured, why not ask.

I’ve been asked to moderate a metaphysical book club at our local bookstore, and while I truly enjoy reading anything in this genre, not everyone agrees with my choices. It’s funny; our regular book club seems happy enough to give new titles a shot – I mean, isn’t that the point of a book club? To read things you might not have read otherwise? We’ve had some rousing discussions about some incredible books, always enjoyable as a result of the wine in which we indulge! But for this genre, for some reason, people are VERY opinionated. Plus there’s the issue of, what IS a “metaphysical” book – is it just “new age” or quantum spirituality, or does it include things like religion, witchcraft, the occult, UFOs and alternative history and conspiracy?

Really I don’t know anymore; our first meeting last month was a great success, as we were honored to have Hank Wesselman himself, along with his beautiful wife, attend our discussion of his book Spiritwalker. For those of you who don’t know, he had an incredible out-of-body time travel experience which shattered his peaceful, scholarly outlook on life – and it happened here on the Big Island. He admitted quite readily he believes we are in for a global catastrophe when the gigantic ice sheet covering Antarctica slides off into the ocean creating a tsunami the likes of which we cannot even imagine. Next month we’re reading Kahuna Healing by Serge Kahili King, as a follow-up to Dr. Wesselman’s book – I’m half way through and already very impressed with the wealth of information there about Hawaiian Huna. Another title we’re sure about is Daniel Pinchbeck’s 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl. But afterwards we tried to decide on upcoming titles and I got quite a few ruffled feathers, a few ‘I read that already and it sucks’, or ‘that’s not metaphysical’, and even ‘that’s too long and difficult.’

So – any suggestions? Anyone?

I’m not the only one here in Hawaii who found it strange that during the ‘hurricane’, satellite radar showed cloud cover when I looked outside and saw sunny skies. It has been the topic of conversation in town and I’m pretty convinced there was something going on there (HAARP, anyone?). Apparently Hurricane Erin also acted strangely. And check out this article (with videos) about strange lights that appeared before the earthquake in Peru recently; here’s the follow-up. A Kean Eye also informs us about the strange ‘hurricane pamphlets’ sent to NYC’s residents just days before a huge storm brought the city to a grinding halt. And seriously. A lot of big earthquakes lately.

Scary follow-up from Trapped in Matter about those new acoustic devices going up in Chicago. Click on the link for the Modulator and listen to the ‘wail’ sound. It’ll make your hair stand on end.

Gotta love the Danger Room. From reminders as to Wal-Mart’s power over China to constant updates on emerging military technologies, I can barely keep up. Spy Blog and Subtopia are fun new discoveries as well, thanks to fellow thinking blogger Kingsley.

Controversy over the Federal ID has Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff warning that citizens in states who don’t ratify the act may have to have passports to travel domestically. Already the new passport rules for traveling to Canada have prompted a surge in new applications as well as a new rule; if you own back child support, good luck. Also the new passports are chipped.

Quite a lot of talk online about the revelation that even the CIA and the Vatican edit certain pages on Wikipedia. Duh. The WikiScanner is now operational but one does wonder why they didn’t cover their tracks better.

More changes at our Kilauea volcano as lava bench collapses.

WordPress users will pick up on the news that the popular blogging platform has been blocked in Turkey. That article contains a few tips on how to circumvent that if you are affected.

Thanks, Rich, for the generosity of spirit to add me to that list!! Richard’s thoughtful blog is always inspiring and I enjoy the read there. (I just want to note the cool description he added about me and this blog, “Imagine you are Neo, the words ‘Wake up Neo, the Matrix has you’ appear on your screen. Meet the woman doing the typing, Angela’s blog is truly eye and mind opening.” Wow!) Ever so humbly I am always amazed that people out there not only read my blog but GET IT!!

The award is a way to pass on ‘blog memes‘ over the Internet and I think it’s a great idea, especially when it involves blogs and writers one knows and respects rather than simple mass linking/spam which I know many sites do as well. In researching the award I already happened on many other great blogs and I didn’t find one who wasn’t happy to get this award. You can check out all the backlinks on Technorati. It’s literally all over the world now. However part of the deal is now I nominate five other blogs, pass it on, and so forth. Such a dilemma – how on earth do I pick five favorites?? Already my blogroll is so overloaded I started having to add them to my extra links page. Plus my reader is bursting at 96 sites and still growing. So to all my blogging colleagues, if you find your blog anywhere on my site, know you ARE one of my favorites, but for this award I will name the five that have most recently made me think, in no particular order. (BTW, Rich, you’d have definitely been on this list had you not already had the honor! )

On the other hand if you don’t care to be involved with this award/link exchange/blog meme, – no hard feelings, eh? You just made me think, is all.

Great audio clip of Bill Hicks on the Elite who govern our world from behind the scenes. On that note, Aftermath News has an interesting article about the Live Earth concerts and a possible manipulation of our good intentions from David de Rothschild.

More on the possibility that at least some cancers could be the result of a nutritional deficiency. Awhile back I suggested we all start eating our apple seeds to be sure we get enough “Vitamin B17″; lately I’ve heard talk about Vitamin D being more helpful than previously thought – both against cancer and possibly also autism. This nutrient is most readily absorbed from the sun through the skin, but note that most sunscreens block this process. The good news is all we really need is 15-20 minutes a day out in the sun.
